Artificial Intelligence Will Be Human Holocaust: Stephen Hawking

Artificial Intelligence: Does It Spell Our End?

Stephen Hawking is the latest in a growing list of great thinkers who are warning us about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (or A.I), with Elon Musk, creator of Tesla doing the same just a few weeks ago (you can read our article on it here).

Artificial Intelligence is a hotly debated topic, and, as we grow closer to a world where technology is developing at a rate faster than humans can keep up with, it is understandable that some of today’s great minds are warning us.

According to an article on RT entitled, “Stephen Hawking: Artificial Intelligence could spell end of human race” [1], the author states: “World-famous physicist Stephen Hawking told the BBC he believes future developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to eradicate mankind.”

A.I. Vs. Our Biological Limitations

As I stated above, part of the bigger problem with Artificial Intelligence is that humans literally are reaching a point already where we can’t keep up with the rapid evolution of technology.  The RT article goes on to say: “The Cambridge professor, who relies on a form of artificial intelligence to communicate, said if technology could match human capabilities ‘it would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate.’

He also said that due to biological limitations, there would be no way humans could match the speed of development of technology.

‘Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete and would be superseded,’ he said.

‘The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.'” [1]

From Sci-Fi Entertainment to A Scary Reality?

With films like “The Terminator”, whose main villain is a monster computer (in a nutshell) that runs something called Skynet to more recent films like “The Matrix”, the concept of AI is not entirely new to us… as fiction.  The growing reality of AI as a real, everyday part of our lives is a very different thought entirely.

An article on Fox News says: “Fears about developing intelligent machines go back centuries. More recent pop culture is rife with depictions of machines taking over, from the computer HAL in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character in “The Terminator” films.

Inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, director of engineering at Google, refers to the point in time when machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence as “the singularity,” which he predicts could come as early as 2045. Other experts say such a day is a long way off.

But how far off is it really?  The Fox article goes on to say about Hawking: “In April, Hawking penned an op-ed for The Huffington Post with well-known physicists Max Tegmark and Frank Wilczek of MIT, and computer scientist Stuart Russell of the University of California, Berkeley, forecasting that the creation of AI will be ‘the biggest event in human history.’ Unfortunately, it may also be the last, the scientists wrote.” [2]

Scary stuff.
