Camping In Your Own Back Yard Is Now Illegal

Camping in your own back yard is now deemed illegal

All across the United States authorities are making it increasingly difficult for people to live off the grid, with some officials now clamping down on people who choose to go camping in their own back yard.

The off-grid lifestyle is enjoyed by around 800 people, but their way of life is under threat as officials try to regulate and license the lifestyle into oblivion. reports:

Tensions boiled over during a county commissioners’ meeting in San Louis, Colorado, devolving into a shouting match between homesteaders and police. One of the major points of contention is the county’s attempt to ban camping on your own property, in an effort to force the off-grid homesteaders back onto the grid.

“We are residents who have come to live off the grid. It’s all our land.” … “These are harsh economic times. We have nowhere to go,” twenty-year resident Paul Skinner said.

“We’ve been regulated out of life,” homesteader Robin Rutan told Colorado Public Radio. “I came here because I couldn’t live by the codes [in other regions].”

The county, which requires residents to have a camping permit to live in an RV, “small house” or other camp style home, has started to simply refuse the renewal of these permits.

This is obviously a major problem for homesteaders, who often live in such accommodations while building their permanent residents.

“They started enforcing the changes before they were actually made,” resident Chloe Everhart said.

Everhart said she performed due diligence prior to buying her land, with one of the most important aspects of the plan being a 90-day camping permit. Without a 90-day permit, camping on residential plots is only allowed for 14 days per every three months.

But just as Everhart was arriving, the board of commissioners instructed the planning and zoning commission to no longer issue camping permits.

In spite of her best efforts, Everhart is now an outlaw.

County land use administrator Matt Valdez disputes the claims that the county is trying to regulate people’s lifestyles out of existence. He says that his office has discretion to deny camping permits under existing code and claims that too many new residents were habitually renewing permits meant to be temporary.

“We’re not trying to drive people off their property,” Valdez said.

Valdez said he simply wants to make sure already established rules are followed for aesthetic and safety reasons.

The vilification of people who choose to live an alternative lifestyle is extremely commonplace in modern America.

While there may be legitimate issues that need to be addressed, people have a right to use land that they own in the manner they see fit. To use the technicalities of the law to essentially evict people from land they own reeks of tyrannical overreach and oppression of personal liberty.

Update: The county has dropped it’s planned zoning changes under increased public scrutiny, but they continue to refuse to issue 90-day camping permits to the off-grid land owners.

This is way too much state interference in our lives! We were born free people and almost instantly are accosted by the state to turn us into corporations through our birth certificates as a money making scheme, our blood is drawn to have a DNA record on each of us, and then the oppression by the predator class posing as elected officers becomes progressively worse until it is impossible to live as a free person anywhere in our own country! It is so bad that the Federal Government has usurped nearly 50% of our land base and will shoot to kill any American who tries to live on it, even if homeless!

The corporate-government has carved things up in such a way that none of us has the means or right to exist without their authority. That stinks of a fascist slave culture, not a nation of free people dictating their own terms in cooperation with their fellows. I am thoroughly outraged by this strong armed intrusion in our lives. If we want to live hanging upside down in trees no one should have the right to be so offended by it because it doesn’t suit their fine sense of aesthetics that they can force another person to live as a slave to their terms. If they want to change the aesthetics they can use their free speech tool and invite, inspire, give examples and help to get others to change, not use the force and violence of the state against free people to enforce their will!

Land and other basic tools of survival should be a human right for each of us, not a commodity controlled by the predators among us in the banking/corporate/government world. If we want a decent and safe society to live in we will have to insist that we each have the right to freely access the means to our survival from the resources given by nature to all of us. This predatory, controlling shit has got to be thrown out of our culture, and it needs to be done NOW before they start killing us en masse because of their assumed superiority backed by violent force.

I do not get it. The woman ‘did her research’ and bought land where she could have a 90 day temporary permit to live without meeting housing codes. I do not think that ‘the state’ should be played for fools by homesteaders pretending that endlessly renewing a temporary relaxation of code is not a permanent situation. is I would like to hear “the state” explanation but it sounds like people are moving in and thinking that pre-existing building codes or sewage do not apply to them. Let;s face it. One mans freedom ends when he starts pissing in another mans drinking water. There have always been people who do not respect other peoples rights. If ‘we the people’ have chosen to create laws that manage the relationships we have with each other, ‘him the person’ does not get to violate them. ‘him the person’ can certainly try to persuade his neighbors to agree to different regulations to redefine where one persons ‘freedom’ ends and another’s begins, but lets stop pretending this is some sort of Government overreach. Government is ‘we the people’ and it is our laws he is violating.

Where in the constitution – highest law of the land to which ALL laws must conform or be invalid, null, and void, – does it state that the govt has any right to take the use of your land? Nowhere. In fact, it clearly states that for govt to take away any individual’s freedom, or property – each count gets a JURY TRIAL – not a judge hearing – a jury trial of your peers.
We have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happpiness, and if you want to live on land and live off-grid then it’s no phukking business of any govt at all. If one gathers their water from cisterns and treats it – your water is going to be better/safer than the urban supply. If you use solar panels – what is the phukken difference between YOUR 120 volts and that of the grid’s 120 volts? Oh yeah – you aren’t helpless when they close you down, your electricity is cleaner, not susceptible to power outages, and you aren’t being forced to pay rich people (who used taxpayer subsidization to build “their” power plants/grids) all your $$$$.

Phukkem – not their business, not their job, not their legitimate authority.

“promote the general welfare” allows for the management of land, air and water.
“Provide for the common defense” allows for the management of land, air and water against individuals who would harm it and through it, us.
“we the people” created these laws. The authority comes from us. ‘Him the criminal’, broke the laws.
If you agree with ‘him the criminal’ and do not like the law, change it.

        • bsroon

Wrong. promote the general welfare is being totally abused. People have LIVED in tougher situations for centuries. We have over a hundred years of camping as a legal precedent. We have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, and there is literally NO CRIME if a HUMAN BEING (not a legal entity or corporation) is not harmed or has property damage or theft involved.
These people camping are not harming anyone and are being better environmentalists in terms of life impact upon the planet than most.
Provide for common defense gives assholes in govt the right to destroy our land, water, and air? Nope. Not at all. Govt sanctioned “geoengineering” sprays toxic coal fly ash – 65% aluminum oxide nanoparticles – into the air, causing drought conditions (water vapor cannot condense with other water vapor particles to form rain because all are bound to like-charged sprayed particulates). Beyond drought conditions the aluminum is causing forest fires to burn more hotly. They are poisoning soils with mineral imbalances – some aluminum sensitive plants are dying.

So you say the govt has permission to kill the patient for a successful operation. Wrong. There is no national security component to this set of gifts you want to provide to the most psychopathic killers on the planet – the parasitic rich class. EVERY ecological problem (and every other) of planetary significance is caused by RICH people, running corporations, making the decisions which have huge impacts. YOUR personal coal or nuke power plant is not causing ecological devastation. YOUR production of that 1.5 BILLION POUNDS of poison sprayed on the US this year is not the main cause of ocean and oxygen death on the planet. Over 270,000 square miles of dead ocean every year now, and your breath takes in slightly less than 65% of the oxygen that should be there because big corporations, run by rich people, decided that killing you doesn’t matter if they can squeeze another penny out of your wallet. So they bought “your” government, and those republicans AND democrats together have sold their souls and your legacy to the govt.

You can see the govt take over more and more aspects of your life, and you argue that they nened to in order to protect us – as life gets worse and worse. As the big drug pushers gained total control of the FDA – our food system is now making the most toxic, least nutritious food on the planet. Our drugs? Never cure a damn thing AND 50% of them have to be taken off the market in 10 years because they are dangerous and/or ineffective – after “being proven safe and effective” and then approved. Ka-ching. Every GMO on the shelf, in your vaccines or cosmetics is there because the FDA broke the law.

We now have the first generation in CENTURIES which has a shorter life expectancy than their parents. THIS IS THE PROGRESS you are supporting in your assinine assertion that nobody can be free.

You need to prove that there is a danger caused – and you must do this on an individual basis. You obviously don’t give a shit about the constitution and your freedoms – but here it is: for the govt to take away ANY FREEDOM from an individual – that human being is entitled to a jury trial of their peers. In order for the govt to take away ANY POSSESSION from a legitimate US human being – they must give that person a jury trial of their peers. That jury has the CONSTITUTIONALLY ACCEPTED RIGHT TO JURY NULLIFICATION.

In other words – the state can prove that someone lived on their land. Off grid. Acquired their own water. Generated their own electricity – they can prove every single point on their accusation list – and the jury has the right to proclaim that despite having proven all their points – that person is innocent because the govt has no right to accuse that person of those stupid things and take away their freedoms or possessions. Proven “guilty” by the state, set free by constitutional authority – the highest law of the land.

You are either a mouthpiece for the demented people (mis)running this show, or you are a brainwashed lemming. (rich guy) HEY! Steven! Look at this magnificent view at the edge of the cliff!!!! As you come over and gaze, they wind up their boot……

          • Steven

You don’t like your neighbors and the laws they made, move. You don’t like your job, quit.
            Best wishes,

          • bsroon

The relevance of your response is not immediately apparent to me – i guess you mean that if i don’t like the laws i am forced to live under i need to find a better neighborhood.

Which neighborhood in Calif has not stolen my freedom? None.

i could go on and on about how you have no freedoms anywhere that you must submit to these illegitimate statutory rulings and laws – since they aren’t in compliance with the constitution – highest law of the land to which ALL laws must comply or be invalid, null, and void – but instead i will state that a more realistic action would be to change the flaws.

You are localizing that old idiocy about “if you don’t like what “Murrica” is doin’ then go live in another country”

No, a person intent upon freedom has not only the right, but the obligation to try to restore their govt to a functioning system that benefits the common good – not just supply the wish list of the “elite” morons running everything including their political prostitutes.

You may not realize it if you don’t live in Calif – but our entire state (and others) have our freedom of religion illegitimately killed. SB277 mandates your kids get vaccinated (medical slavery, state practicing medicine without a license – violation of 1st amendment rights) and that makes that law null and void. PERIOD.

Maryland called up a bunch of people – all unvaccinated – and had them come to the courthouse, where they were herded inside by sheriffs deputies and their police attack dogs, and forcefully vaccinated – many against their wills, and against all laws in Maryland and the US.

You want this shit to continue, or support a govt that is FAR more tyrannical than what the colonists killed for the freedoms they are stealing from you? FINE – then YOU leave and find a dictatorship you are comfortable living under – i’ll keep fighting the despotism here, thank you very much.

          • Steven

I got to tell you. You live in a free Country. You are the Government of this Country, right alongside me. We the People are the Government in the United States of America. On Long island in this free Country, we chose to allow 1/4 acre zoning and when your neighbor grows black walnut trees you cannot grow tomatoes. You cannot make him cut down his tree, so you cannot “live of the land” here because his freedom over ruled yours.Tough shit. You are also not allowed to piss outside in your own back yard. We are so close together that if you go out in the back yard and start waving your cock around little girls living next door can see you. Turns out there were so many prudes who wanted the freedom to go out in their back yards without seeing an old man roll around naked in poison ivy that we passed a law that decided their freedom to be prudes over ruled my freedom to be an asshole. Sucked for me and it was gonna suck for either me or them. Somebody wasn’t gonna have their ‘freedom’ to live they wanted to.

Where you live you have 35 acres. If you want to reside permanently in a tent on your property, go visit your neighbors and get them to sign a petition to change the laws. If you persuade them to change the law in your favor, congratulations, you have more freedom and those who wanted the law have less. If you lose, they have more freedom and you have less.
Now get out there. Write your petition, collect your signatures and go excersize your freedom in the freest Country in the world. But stop acting like you own the place all by yourself because you don’t.

          • bsroon

Boy, do YOU have it wrong. We don’t live in a free country. YOU and your neighbors did not make any of those STATUTORY laws that regulate your life down to the tiniest (in)fraction of your action. Your Township, County, (whatever) city, and state are corporations, and the boards of those corporations do what they want to increase the income of their fiefdom. Whether that means to run things with high taxes and assets that attract the mediocre wealth that will feed those taxes, their wages, and egos – or to sell off tax breaks to bring in businesses that you and your neighbors have to pay for.
That is what corporate cities/counties do. And we, the workers, pay the corporate support.

In Colorado i’d had 3.7 acres at 7,865 feet elevation. In West Virginia i had 40.81 acres, had to carry my house parts in one-quarter mile, and build it myself – no bldg codes, utilities, or anybody to have to dictate to me. Raise horse? OK. Goats? OK. Chickens? OK. Get a milk cow and drink raw milk for years? OK. Slaughter deer and the calf, and the chickens? OK.

Lived in a house in town in Ely Mn for almost 10 more years – nice enough place, but you couldn’t really breathe until you headed into the wilderness area cross country skiing or paddling in warm weather. It was okay, and the town was not really extremely restrictive, but it was a town, you had to pay taxes for things that were not really done well and damaged your property, etc.

Now i’m in Calif – the land of the anti-constitutional SB277 law that forces your kid to get vaccinated or not go to school. Then when not everyone can afford the time or $$$ to homeschool – you would get your kid stolen by the state for bullshit laws made by a CORPORATION called the state of california, passed by a couple people bribed by drug pushers for their profits with zero proof of societal improvement or safety…..(there has never been any study by any drug pushing vax mfgr, any govt agency, or even the fake govt agency the CDC – which is a private corporation with a Dun and Bradstreet listing at their Atlanta address – not ONE study comparing vaccinated children’s health against unvaccinated children’s health – and it is NOT done because the vaccinated kids are MUCH more sickly, diseased, and unhealthy)

So here again – you do not have the PEOPLE making laws for our protection and betterment – you have pawns or prostitutes of the rich doing what the rich want – and YOU and your kids will pay the price. You are not free. You are not the govt – it doesn’t even LISTEN or care about you at all. But ….. you are probably non-processing enough that you are going to vote for a republican or a democrat again – because they TOLD YOU that voting for anyone else is a waste of your vote – and you aren’t sharp enough to see through that lie. So you will vote for them AGAIN – (160 years now for ONLY those 2 swapping out majority power) and won’t even think that you are repeating the same action and still expecting a different result.

In my family, you and your neighbors are defined as lemmings. Go find your cliff. My camping on my property doesn’t hurt a damn soul, and since it isn’t your property and doesn’t even affect you as much as your walnut analogy – that analogy is apropos in that i will do what i want and hope someone poops in your beer, because you have NO say over my property. Your arguments would hold water if you understood the difference btwn constitutional and statutory laws – and knew that ALL statutory laws, and congressional laws must comply with the constitution or they are null and void. There is no constitutional authority in the destruction of my right to camp on my property – but you have to be smart enough to realize who you are – and clue here – you are NOT a person.

Got back from Hawaii or would’ve gotten back sooner.

These regulations are not actually valid laws. They are CORPORATIONS – state, municipal, county – pretending that as corporations you are in a legally binding agreement with them as a legal entity. You are hooked into that system through stealth on their parts.
YOU are a human being – they pretend and trick you into thinking you are a legal entity – a false “person” from the latin “persona” (mask in front of the real actor) and that YOU are legally responsible for contractual agreements between these two legal entities. Corporation and your “person”, your “strawman” that they keep trying to tie you up with.
As human beings we invented governments TO SERVE US, but as a mere fictitious legal entity – you are supposedly in a legally binding agreement with your multiple levels of govt. In reality – there can be no legally binding agreement btwn a corporation and a human being. In reality, your implied contracts with “society” are ALSO non-binding since all contracts must be signed/acknowledged by both parties WITH FULL DISCLOSURE having been provided.
YOU were never given anywhere close to full disclosure.
