‘The European Union is to pull the plug on high-wattage hair dryers, smartphones, electric kettles and dozens of household electrical appliances in a follow up to a controversial ban on powerful vacuum cleaners.
New proposals are expected next spring to meet EU targets on energy efficiency by outlawing small electrical devices that European officials regard as using too much electricity.
Current EU legislation covers televisions, washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners but not the variety of smaller sized electrical appliances used in the daily life of households across Europe.
A European Commission study, that is still being completed, has identified up to 30 electrical appliances to be covered by the EU’s Ecodesign directive outlawing high-wattage devices including electric kettles, hair dryers, wifi routers and smartphones.
Günther Oettinger, the German EU energy commissioner, said that legislation preventing consumers from buying high-wattage appliances was necessary to fight climate change.’
