A gunman is believed to have killed four members of his own family in rural Washington state before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide.

Police were at an hours-long standoff with a gunman at a home near Belfair, Mason County, 70 miles west of Seattle on Friday. This is the third multiple shooting incident in the U.S. in less than a week.

The Telegraph reports:

The latest incident took place at Belfair, around 70 miles west of Seattle. A man rang the local police telling them he had shot two children, a woman and another person.

Police rushed to the scene and surrounded the house.

After three hours of negotiations, the man walked out of the property and turned the gun on himself. A girl who survived has been taken to hospital.

Jack Piggott, a neighbour in the remote rural area, told the Seattle Times that he initially thought the gun shots were just target practice.

However he switched on the television after being called by others living in the area.

“I’m looking at the TV and there’s a picture of my road. I said, ‘My God that’s my driveway. There’s SWAT cars … halfway down the road,’ ” Mr Piggott said. “I’m kind of surprised this happened up here in my paradise.”

The latest killings will came within 24 hours another shooting spree, this time in Hesston, Kansas, 35 miles north of Wichita. when a man, named by police as Cedric Ford, 38, went on the rampage.

He killed three people and wounded 14 others before being shot dead by police.

On Sunday Jason Brian Dalton, an Uber driver, has been charged with six counts of murder following a five hour gun rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan in which victims were shot dead at three different locations.

Three multiple shootings in a week could once again push the issue of gun control up the political agenda.

But while the Democrats have pledged to tighten the rules, the Republican candidates have vowed to oppose any legislation imposing curbs on the US constitution’s second amendment right to bear arms.
