The highest court in Italy has just acquitted Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito of the murder of Meredith Kercher.
Amanda Knox and her boyfriend Sollecito were accused of killing the British student Meredith Kercher in Italy, in 2007. They were found guilty at first. Later the verdict was overturned and Amanda went home to the U.S.A.
Still later she was found guilty again but refused to go back to face judgement. Finally after a final appeal, the highest court in Italy has cleared her once and for all of the crime of murder.
In the meantime since the Murder of Meredith, the attention of the authorities and the media has been on the story surrounding Kercher’s death. Mainly involving Amanda Knox and her weird behavior at the time of the murder and during police inquiries that followed. This itself led to the focus shining on the police and authorities who dealt with the case of weirdness, which in turn led to a serious of weird decisions by the Italian courts.
As Meredith Kercher’s mother points out: “I can’t see how evidence that was once deemed evidence is now no longer thought to be evidence.”
The Daily Record reports:
Last night the pair were acquitted by the highest Italian court. The judges ruling brings the long-running saga to an end after the pair were initially convicted.
After thoroughly examining the case, the judges concluded that the conviction could not be supported by the evidence.
Reacting to the news, Arline Kercher, from Coulsdon, Surrey, seemed numb as she said: “I am a bit surprised and shocked if I’m honest.
“I don’t know what to say.
“I can’t see how evidence that was once deemed evidence is now no longer thought to be evidence.
“I am still shocked.”
Talking about the Italian legal system she said: “It is a long drawn out process.”
She then added: “If you write anything, never forget Meredith.”
Meredith’s father John declined to comment this evening.
