The arrival of sports betting in New York was highly anticipated for some time amongst both operators and sports bettors alike.
The opening of one of the biggest states within the US in January was expected to return some eye-watering figures and that has proven to be the case thus far, with three different real money sportsbooks already soaring past the $1bn handle mark for the year so far.
Since the start of mobile sports betting in the state in January, nearly half of the eight licensed operators have already accepted more than $1 billion worth of bets from their players. Those who boast these significant figures are FanDuel, Caesars and DraftKings.
FanDuel currently tops the list with a reported handle of $1.55 billion, making them the biggest New York sportsbook with a $400 million margin over their next closest competitor. Next in line is Caesars, whose handle stands at $1.14 billion, while DraftKings rounds off the list with $1.06 billion.
When including the other five licensed sportsbooks that are part of the eight active operators in New York, the combined handle total rises to $4.35 billion in bets placed across the state. All figures are courtesy of the New York State Gaming Commission.
That total is set to increase further once BallyBet finally launches in New York. They are expected to be live sometime in April following approval from the state.
Sports bettors were first allowed to begin placing wagers using upstate New York casinos in July 29 before the launch of mobile gambling at the opening of 22.
New York could hardly have picked a better time to approve mobile gambling for its residents. Handle numbers have certainly enjoyed inflation from a number of high-profile sporting events in the early months of this year such as the Super Bowl, NFL Playoffs, March Madness and still has the start of the NBA Playoffs to come in April.
The popularity of March Madness was highlighted in the recently released figures that saw $427.9 million wagered online for the week of March 14-20. Unsurprisingly, it was FanDuel who enjoyed the biggest handle of the week at $167.9 million.
