British authorities are on high alert today over fears that the Paris attacker, Salah Abdeslam, will bomb London during the New Year celebrations.
The ISIS militant, currently on the run, is suspected to be hiding out in Europe with an accomplice after fleeing Morocco after last month’s massacre.
Capitals across the continent are braced for an outrage amid concerns Abdeslam, 26, is crossing borders on a false passport.
A French judicial source probing the Paris attacks told The Sun: “Abdeslam could easily be back in France.
“He is a dangerous IS operative with access to arms and must be stopped at all costs. Another spectacular attack is possible and there is no way of telling where it might be.”
A French Interior Ministry source added: “The entire state is involved in trying to capture Abdeslam and others like him.
“Paris remains vulnerable but other capitals such as London are at risk. He could be back in France, in England or elsewhere. It is not difficult to travel under the radar.”
Popular spots across Europe will be heavily guarded on Thursday night. Russia has warned citizens staying at home is the safest way to celebrate.
And Austrian security sources say an unidentified intelligence service has warned “numerous European capitals” of an attack involving explosives or a shooting in crowded spaces between Christmas and New Year.
The source said: “Several potential attackers were mentioned and their names checked. The investigation has yielded no concrete results so far.”
There will be unprecedented security in Paris. Fireworks have been banned for fear of alarming revellers and triggering a stampede. There will be no official celebrations beyond a midnight countdown.
The Met says a “strong but proportionate” police presence will patrol London. Keith Vaz, Commons home affairs committee chairman, said: “We should never allow the threat of terrorism to frighten us into changing our normal lives.”
— IS terrorists yelled “Where’s the singer? Where are the Yanks? You bomb with the Americans so we are attacking them and you”, as they killed 90 fans of US band Eagles of Death Metal at Paris’s Bataclan theatre, a leaked dossier has revealed.
