How Does The MLS Season Work?
Like most major American sports, Major League Soccer’s season is split into two sections — the Regular Season and the Playoffs. All 28 franchises compete in the Regular Season, playing a total of 34 matches.
These 34 matches are comprised of 17 at home and 17 away. There are two divisions within Major League Soccer — the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Teams play each of their Conference opponents twice over the course of the season, accounting for 26 of their games, with the remaining eight being played against cross-Conference rivals.
Seven teams from each Conference will qualify for the Playoffs based on their league position. The two teams that finish top of the table in the Eastern Conference and Western Conference will receive a bye straight to the Conference Semifinals, as well as an automatic place in the following season’s CONCACAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, the remaining six teams will compete in a single elimination match in the First Round. All of the Playoff matches are single elimination through the First Round, Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and MLS Cup Final. The MLS Cup Final is contested each season between the winners of the Eastern Conference Finals and Western Conference Finals.
The winners of the MLS Cup will earn a CONCACAF Champions League place for the following season if they hadn’t already through finishing top of the table in their respective conference. If the MLS Cup winners also finished top of their Conference during the Regular Season the team that finished second will take the additional place in the competition for that Conference. The team that finished second in the losing Conference’s table will then take the second CONCACAF Champions League place for their conference.
Teams that compete in the MLS can play a maximum of 38 fixtures in the competition over the course of the Regular Season and Playoffs. Unlike the conventional system of soccer leagues in Europe, the MLS runs over the course of one calendar year and takes the months off the winter.
