Los Angeles Lakers point guard Russell Westbrook is facing the prospect of playing for his fifth different team in as many seasons.

Having spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 33-year-old has since become an expendable commodity at his next three stops. Paul George’s trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in the summer of 2019 begun a rebuild in OKC that saw Westbrook moved to Houston to play with his former teammate, James Harden.

The Rockets’ small ball experiment was short lived as Westbrook was flipped to the Washington Wizards in exchange for John Wall, in a trade that was dubbed as the trading of the two worst contracts in the NBA.

His play alongside Bradley Beal helped the Wizards reach the Playoffs, but they were beaten convincingly in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers. Then came the Lakers, star hunting as they regularly do and gave up Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Montrezl Harrell to bring the California native home.

Joining a supposed ‘big three’ alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, many NBA betting sites had the Lakers as the favourites to come out of the Western Conference. Instead, they failed to make the Playoffs altogether amidst a season hindered by injuries to Davis and James and a general lack of chemistry throughout the squad.

The retirement home memes that came alongside the construction of the Lakers roster proved to be more accurate than most would’ve ever thought. Westbrook’s play was extremely inconsistent, as he averaged the lowest points per game since his sophomore season in the NBA.

The fit between Westbrook and James was always a contentious topic and the doubters were vindicated for their skepticism. At no point did it feel like a natural fit. The Lakers had a deal agreed with the Sacramento Kings for shooting guard Buddy Hield before pulling the trigger on the Westbrook trade.

That trade would have seen just Kuzma and Harrell headed to Sacramento, thus allowing the Lakers to keep hold of Caldwell-Pope to provide the perimeter defense that they desperately lacked throughout the season.

All in all it’s fair to say that the Westbrook experiment hasn’t paid off and moving him and his $47 million contract will be easier said than done. The Lakers have little draft equity to offer teams as a sweetener in a potential deal and getting to the necessary salary to put a trade through will be a challenge.
