‘The advanced weapon is part of a programme to create a missile that will destroy targets anywhere on Earth within an hour of launch.
After detecting a problem, experts destroyed the missile near the test range in Alaska, the Pentagon confirmed.
The mission was aborted to ensure public safety after the fault was detected on the computers. No one was injured in the incident.
“We had to terminate,” Maureen Schumann, a spokeswoman for the US Defense department said.
She added: “The weapon exploded during takeoff and fell back down in the range complex. The incident also caused an undetermined amount of damage to the launch facility.”
The missile is thought to be part of the US programme to counter the growing development of ballistic missiles in Iran and North Korea as well as the arms race with China.’
