When the PASPA federal law was overturned in 2018, sports betting was once again allowed in the USA, and several states immediately jumped on the bandwagon. New Jersey was one of them and today is one of the states where it’s easy to gamble online. But what led to New Jersey’s positive outlook on gambling, and how did it evolve into what the legislation states today?

We’ll be looking at the history of gambling in New Jersey and its impact on current online gambling laws. We will also be looking at different features that the best online betting sites in New Jersey should have, like the bet types they offer, bonuses, payment methods, etc. We have also included offshore sportsbooks within this list, which can be accessed by New Jersey sports bettors.

Online Sportsbooks in New Jersey

New Jersey was one of the first states to legalize sports betting after the Supreme Court declared PASPA unconstitutional. New Jersey has always pushed the boundaries when it comes to sports betting, with the state passing a bill that allowed sports betting in 2012. At this point in time, sports betting was still illegal in the US due to the PASPA federal law, barring four states.

When the Supreme Court stated that New Jersey wasn’t allowed to offer sports betting under this law, the lawmakers in New Jersey decided to appeal against that ruling. After several years of court cases and appeals, New Jersey’s fight to have sports betting legalized in the state eventually led to the PASPA being declared void.

As such, New Jersey could immediately offer real money online sportsbooks to bettors and was one of the fastest states to enter the betting market. Today, New Jersey still offers many online sportsbooks, all licensed and regulated by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. As long as the bettors are located within state borders, they are allowed to bet at NJ online sportsbooks.

However, several NJ online sportsbooks are available to bettors, so we decided to evaluate them according to certain criteria to find the best New Jersey online sportsbooks.

Betting Options

A variety of betting options is vital when you want to bet on several sports. As you dive deeper into the sports betting market, you realize that certain bets are better for certain sports or specific situations. That’s why we listed the most popular bets below, with a short explanation of what they constitute.

Moneyline Betting

When you bet on which team will win, without any other factors involved, you are making a money line bet. You will generally see the odds presented in the American format, with plus and minus odds. This shows which team is believed to have a better chance of winning and which team is expected to lose. The higher a team’s chance of winning, the lower its odds are.

For example, if two teams had the odds of -110 and +115, then if you bet on the favorite to win, your odds are -110. To win $100, you need to bet $110, the minus odds amount, but you will do it the opposite way if you bet on the underdog. Plus odds mean you bet $100 to win $115, the plus odds amount. This is because the chances of that team winning are so small that you get higher returns if it does happen.

Live Betting

Live betting forms a gateway between betting online and in person at a bet shop or casino. While you can still do it from the comfort of your home, you sometimes have access to live streams of the match and can make new bets depending on what happens during the match. Several types of bets are available when making live bets, though the most prevalent type is prop bets.

Spread

A point spread bet is a way to equalize the inequality in odds between two teams. If a match has vastly different odds, like -120 and +130, bookmakers may average these odds out to -110 for both teams. In order to do that, they need to impose margins for the teams to win or lose by on the teams, called the spread.

This is given in a plus and minus points format, with a half-point added to avoid ties.

Teams will have odds like +6.5 (-110), and -6.5 (-110), which means the favorite to win still has minus odds, with the underdogs having plus odds. All this means is that for a bet on the favorites to succeed, the favorites need to win with seven points or more. For a bet on the underdogs to succeed, they need to lose with a less than 6 point difference or, alternatively, win the game.

Total Bet

The totals bet doesn’t take into consideration which team won the match, but rather the combined points scored during the match. Bookmakers will decide on a number they believe will be the total number of points scored collectively during the game. This number will also have a half point added to avoid ties. As this is also called the Over/Under bet, bettors will bet on whether they believe the total points will end up being over or under the bookmaker’s guess.

So if a bookmaker sets the spread at 11.5 for a game, it means that if the game ends with 12 points or more, the OVER bet will succeed. If the game ends with 11 points or less, then the UNDER bet succeeds.

Future Bet

Futures bets focus on bets made in the future, ranging from a week, months, even years from when you make the wager. The catch is that you only get your winnings paid out at the end of the season or tournament the match you bet on is part of.

You should also have the bankroll to fund it properly, knowing you won’t receive your winnings immediately. Since futures bets are made so far in the future, the odds tend to change constantly as the season progresses and new information comes to light.

Prop Bets

If you don’t necessarily want to bet on the match outcome of the points of a match, then prop bets are the way to go. Prop bets refer to bets that rely on a specific event or situation coming to pass. These can be bets centered on an individual player’s performance during a game to how many fouls will be called. Regardless of who wins the game, a prop bet will succeed if the specific terms of your bet are fulfilled or come to pass.

Parlay Bet

When you make multiple bets on a single bet slip, you are making a Parlay bet. There can be up to ten bets on a single bet slip, and parlay bets promise high returns if successful. The catch lies in that parlay bets are much riskier. Not only do you need a bigger bankroll to make all the separate bets, but you also need every bet on the bet slip to result in a win for the bet slip to be counted as a win. If you lose even one bet, even if all nine other bets are wins, then the entire slip is void.

New Jersey Sportsbooks Promotions and Bonuses

While bet types are important, sports betting bonuses and promotions are equally important, as it helps you make more bets. Bonuses are a bettor’s friend, whether amateurs or experienced bettors. It provides bettors an opportunity to receive bonus funds or other benefits when betting on an online sportsbook.

Matched deposit bonuses are seen frequently, offering bettors a bonus of 100% to 500%, up to a certain amount of bonus funds, when they make a qualifying deposit. It can also offer players free bets, which are bonus credits or tokens that generally have an assigned value. Welcome bonuses make use of this type of bonus with a first deposit bonus, sometimes even spanning across multiple deposits.

Online sportsbooks also at times offer free bets as a welcome bonus. A risk-free bet refers to when you can make any bet, usually up to a certain amount, and if the bet results in a loss, your initial bet will be credited back to your account. As with all bonuses, there will be certain requirements and restrictions, such as it only being valid for your first bet or for 24 hours upon registration. There can also be wagering requirements, as well as minimum deposit and capped winnings limits.

Withdrawals and Deposits at New Jersey Online Sportsbooks

Looking at the different payment methods generally offered at New Jersey online sportsbooks, we identified the most popular methods for NJ players. We have listed them below, as well as explained their pros and cons.

Credit Cards and Debit Cards

While cards are almost always offered as a deposit method at online sportsbooks, they aren’t always available for withdrawals, and they usually have fees. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards are the ones most often seen, and payouts can take between two and five days.

Prepaid Cards/Play+

If you don’t want to go the card route, prepaid cards or Play+ cards are always available. Prepaid cards usually refer to Paysafecards or AstroPay cards, but these are generally not offered as withdrawal methods.

Play+ cards, on the other hand, is a card linked with the sportsbook brand and is a versatile way to deposit and withdraw money from an online sportsbook. Players can load money into their Play+ card through their banking app, e-wallet, or card, and they can even withdraw money using their play+ card from an ATM.

PayPal

Arguably the method that US players use the most, PayPal is a great way to deposit and withdraw money from an online sportsbook. It has little to no fees and usually takes between 24 hours and three days for payouts. It also acts as an intermediary if your card company or bank doesn’t allow transactions with an online gambling service provider. There is plenty of demand for PayPal sportsbooks from the betting community.

Online Banking

A pretty straightforward payment method, bank and wire transfers often take the longest to withdraw. They can take up to seven or ten days, and there is often a fee attached from the bank, if not the gambling service provider. However, it’s still an almost universally offered banking method and is often the go-to if other methods don’t work or aren’t available.

PayNearMe

This method is perfect if you don’t want to make any online payments. Certain sportsbooks allow you to deposit or withdraw money using a partnered third-part establishment, like Seven-11 or CVS.
